Gearing up to educate drivers during Road Safety Week 2016

Driver Safety, Driving Awareness

Road Safety Week 2016

Last November, we got involved in the annual Road Safety Week that is co-ordinated by road safety charity, Brake. Road Safety Week 2016 will run 21-27 November, and thousands of businesses, organisations, and community groups are all getting involved to help raise awareness on the importance of road safety in reducing and preventing road-related accidents.

Every day in the UK, five people die on roads and about 60 more are seriously injured, causing needless loss of life and suffering. This highlights the need to educate people on road safety and correct driving behaviours so we can all help to make our villages, towns and cities safer places to be.

The theme of Road Safety Week 2016 focuses on encouraging people to ‘Make the Pledge’. The Pledge calls for people to drive less, and if they do drive, to do everything they can to protect themselves and the people around them.

Road Safety Week 2016 - Make the Pledge

Brake believes that this can be achieved by following the six elements of the Brake Pledge (Slow, Sober, Secure, Silent, Sharp, and Sustainable – find out what each element means here). By educating people on correct driving behaviours and reducing the number of vehicles on the road, the number of road accidents will also reduce significantly.

For many people and businesses however, driving is an essential part of their day-to-day operations. This is certainly the case for us as a vehicle leasing company, as our business is involved in millions of business miles every year. So, we are focusing our efforts on raising the awareness of road safety to ensure company drivers and their vehicles are as safe as they can be.

During the week, we will be running a road safety campaign across our social media platforms, sharing practical advice with our colleagues, customers, and wider network by focusing on the six elements and how they can make our roads safer.

In addition to this, we are also challenging people to complete and pass a hazard perception test. The hazard perception part was only introduced to the driver theory test in 2002, so many people will not have attempted one before.  This test will test your skills and help you to identify hazards on the road. We also offer services that can help with the safety of your drivers. Our Duty of Care services offer extensive support to both you and your company drivers, such as our Driver Training, Driver Support, and Online Driver Licence Checks, which will ensure that they are both fit and able to drive.

We encourage all businesses to show their support and get involved in Road Safety Week 2016. There are so many ways to help achieve Brake’s vision of a world that has zero road deaths and injuries. You can join us in making the Brake Pledge, or run a ‘Bright Day’ for Brake at your workplace. Together, we can do our bit in helping to make roads in Britain safer.
