London T-Charge to reduce harmful emmisions

Tags: ,

In a bid to discourage the use of older, more polluting vehicles in central London, the London T-Charge, or Toxicity Charge, will come into effect later this month.

The T-Charge will be applicable to any vehicle, excluding motorbikes, driving within central London on weekdays between the hours of 07.00 and 18.00 which does not meet minimum exhaust emission standards.

What are the minimum exhaust emission standards?

For both general petrol and diesel vehicles including cars, vans and minibuses, the minimum emissions standards are Euro 4. For HGVs, it is Euro IV. And for motorised tricycles and quadricycles, is it Euro 3. To check if your vehicle falls out of the required emissions standards, use the TfL Vehicle Compliance Checker.

How much does it cost?

The charge is £10 per day, and is in addition to the London Congestion Charge.

The below table illustrates how much motorists will pay per day, per vehicle type:

How long will the T-Charge run for?

The T-Charge is part of the Transport for London’s (TfL) plans to reduce air pollution in the city, in particular with regard to nitrogen dioxide (NO2) and particulate matter.

The T-Charge will run until 2020 when the Ultra Low Emission Zone (ULEZ) is implemented. To find out more about the ULEZ and other proposals tackling London’s air pollution, visit tfl.gov.uk.
