Drivers Need to be Reminded About the Importance of Vehicle Checks

For many companies operating fleets of vehicles, there is a huge reliance on the driver to ensure the vehicle remains roadworthy.

However, irrespctive of the guidelines laid out by most fleet operators in their driver handbook, regular vehicle checks are rarely performed as more and more drivers rely on in-car technology to tell them when there is a problem.

However, there are many reasons why it is essential to remind drivers to check their vehicles.

"Safety is, of course, the main priority," explains John Phenix, Operations Manager at Sandicliffe Motor Contracts, "as it is vital to ensure a vehicle is not being driven with worn or under-inflated tyres, lights that are not working or broken windscreen wipers.

"Then there is also the cost aspect. If a driver fails to check the oil or other vital engine fluids resulting in damage to the engine, that can result in a very hefty repair bill.

"And finally there is the health and safety angle, with employers having a legal obligation to make sure they take measures to ensure their vehicles are safe and roadworthy, and this includes privately owned cars being used for business travel."
